Our story – pioneer spirit

Captain E W Wakefield. The Wakefields of Kendal

Mr Wakefield at the joystick in his precarious ‘cockpit’.

The Sonata property was first owned in 1851 by E W Wakefield Esq., whose grandson Captain E W Wakefield was a British aviation pioneer. True to his family motto ‘be just and fear not’, it was his plane – Waterbird, which on 25 November 1911 made the first flight from water in the UK from Lake Windermere.

We also have our own connection to early British aviation. My great-great-grandfather Mr Moray was a pilot in the early days of the Royal Air Force. He was sent to Ceylon, then a far flung British Crown Colony, where he married Miss Din-giri-manike. His family and subsequent generations, including myself grew up in Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka).

A little of his pioneering spirit brought us – a Sri Lankan couple, to Kendal and its beautiful countryside. We are located near Kendal town centre and provide bed and breakfast accommodation. We would love to tell you about our own first hand experiences of Kendal town, the English Lakes and Yorkshire Dales.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Inoka & Chris Perera

The Sonata Kendal bed and breakfast rooms offer a comfortable stay to guests, including: white sheets, duvets and pillowcases professionally cleaned by a commercial Lakeland laundry – all beds are made and rooms cleaned daily, making this Kendal Bed and Breakfast one of the best places to stay in Kendal. The B&B is being refurbished as a contemporary Kendal Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Budget travellers now go to a Premier Inn or a Travelodge, so Kendal b&bs need to provide a nicer experience – an antidote to the claustrophobic uniformity of chain hotels, something that’s a bit like staying at the home of a tasteful friend (albeit the more tasteful; the expensive the stay). Hence there are no rules here, only consideration for others! The Sonata Kendal B&B attracts guests from all over the UK on business and leisure and the lack of rules, a more personal service – it’s friendly but never intrusive, and cleanliness have made this B&B so popular. When you walk into the bedroom, your heart should not sink nor when you wake, feel depressed. Instead it should both relax and energise you.The Kendal Bed and Breakfast enjoys a location in town, close to Windermere road, and our Kendal B&B guests can stroll through the town of Kendal, with its Kent River, Brewery Arts Centre and independent shops, bars and restaurants. A 10-15 minute walk to the famous Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Quaker Tapestry Visitor Centre, a little further uphill to Kendal Castle and a short drive away from Levens Hall and Sizergh Castle. Carus Green golf course and Kendal Golf club are only 2 and 4 minutes drive away. The award winning breakfast served at the Sonata Kendal Bed and Breakfast is locally-sourced to support local farmers, and great emphasis is put on fresh, high quality and seasonal produce. The Kendal B&B was built circa 1851 and it still retains attractive period features. In the 1970’s it was a sweetshop with Flying Saucers, Fizzy Cola Bottles and Love Hearts! Try some Kendal Mint Cake which is still manufactured in Kendal. Guests at the Sonata Bed and Breakfast can enjoy a comfortable stay in rooms benefiting from the on-going refurbished program which gives modern comforts to this lovely period property. From the time the Kendal B&B opened, we are grateful for the repeat bookings and recommendations from satisfied guests.
